FSMA Food Safety Modernization Act

About 48 million people in the U.S. (1 in 6) get sick, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die each year from foodborne diseases, according to recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This is a significant public health burden that is largely preventable.

What is FSMA?

The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) is a U.S. law enacted in 2011 that significantly reformed food safety regulations. It shifts the focus from responding to foodborne illnesses to preventing them, by giving the FDA more authority to regulate the food supply chain. FSMA aims to ensure the safety of the U.S. food supply by implementing preventive measures throughout the entire food production and distribution process, from farm to table.

FSMA Internal Audit

A FSMA internal audit is a systematic assessment of a food business's compliance with the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) regulations. It involves a comprehensive review of the facility's food safety management system, including its written plans, procedures, and records, to identify areas of non-compliance and opportunities for improvement. These audits are typically conducted internally by the company's own trained staff or consultants and are crucial for preparing for third-party audits and ensuring ongoing compliance with FSMA.
